Tottenham Hotspur will meet Liverpool in the Champions
League final. This is the second time England representatives have met in the
final of the European club's elite tournament.
Tottenham qualified for the final after a 3-2 win over
Ajax Amsterdam in the Champions League semi-final second leg at the Johan
Cruijff Arena Stadium on Wednesday (8/5) local time.
The Lilywhites trailed 0-2 because of goals scored by
Matthijs de Ligt and Judge Ziyech. In the second half the visitors turned
things around thanks to Lucas Moura's hat trick.
A score of 3-2 made Ajax vs Tottenham's aggregate score
3-3. But Mauricio Pochettino's side escaped due to an away goal advantage after
a 0-1 defeat in the first leg of the semi-final.
Tottenham are following in the footsteps of Liverpool who
have already qualified for the final. The Reds confirmed the ticket after a 4-0
win over Barcelona at Anfield even though in the first leg they were beaten
0-3.
The success of Tottenham and Liverpool qualifying for the
final was the second time that two British representatives met at the top of
the Champions League tournament.
The final of the first English team in the Champions
League took place in 2008. At that time Manchester United lifted the Champions
League trophy after winning 6-5 (1-1) on Chelsea at the Luzhniki Stadium,
Moscow
In addition, a meeting of fellow English clubs has also
occurred in the UEFA Cup which is now called the Europa League in 1972. In the
final format using two legs, Tottenham came out as champions after beating
Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 on aggregate.
Tottenham managed to beat Wolverhampton 2-1 in the first
leg of the final at Molineux Stadium. When playing at home, the North London
